based on Astrology

2023-02-10 Alte Oper Frankfurt

Michael J. Fox: I realized, with gratitude, optimism is sustainable.

Gustav Holst (1917) The Planets, Op. 32

Gustav Holst (1914-1917) The Planets, Op. 32
based on Astrology
NDR Radiophilharmonie / Andrew Manze conductor
2022 Hannover Proms : The Opening Concert
2022-09-17  Kuppelsaal, Hanover Congress Centre

I. Mars, the Bringer of War  [00:02]

II. Venus, the Bringer of Peace  [07:20]

III. Mercury, the Winged Messenger  [15:25]

IV. Jupiter, the Bringer of Jollity  [19:31]

V. Saturn, the Bringer of Old Age  [27:50]

VI. Uranus, the Magician  [36:34]

VII. Neptune, the Mystic  [42:18]

Gustav Holst: These pieces were suggested by the astrological significance of the planets. There is no programme music in them, neither have they any connection with the deities of classical mythology bearing the same names. If any guide to the music is required, the subtitle to each piece will be found sufficient, especially if it be used in a broad sense. For instance, Jupiter brings jollity in the ordinary sense, and also the more ceremonial type of rejoicing associated with religions or national festivities. Saturn brings not only physical decay, but also a vision of fulfillment. Mercury is the symbol of the mind.

(cf. William T. Vollmann (2005) Europe Central )

above all 므라빈스키!
