Many Kinds of White

Lauren Hanson (2022), in: Monochrome. ZERO and Dansaekhwa, Heidelberg: arthistoricum.net-ART-Books

Formal comparisons reveal both ZERO and Dansaekhwa artists were interested in interrogating the space of painting—its defining characteristics, the tension between flatness and depth, a renegotiation of the relationship between the artist’s “hand” and its index—and its metaphysical and phenomenological implications. Both groups, either in the wake or the midst of wartime devastation, political and cultural oppression, and/or sociopolitical and economic turmoil, sought to turn painting inside out, to understand it from all angles, planes, and surfaces. Questioning the very nature of painting, they challenged previous definitions to create works absent what might have been considered painting’s one defining characteristic: the application of liquid pigment on a surface.

👍😍

Lee’s conception of the color white as “a void for consciousness” or “a vessel for thought” results in paintings that act as propositions of how to represent the emptiness contained within a vessel, in which absence is revealed only when adjacent to a counterbalancing presence. Lee’s previous works from the early 1970s included the outlines of everyday containers, but in the works at the Tokyo Gallery “the outlines have gradually begun to disappear, and … the delineation of objects has been reduced to the point where only a suggestion of their existence remains.”
